Preserved County

Preserved County (in German "maintained county", Welsh "Siroedd cadwedig") is the name in Wales for the areas of responsibility of the ceremonial Lord Lieutenants , the representatives of the British monarch in Wales. Every Preserved County also has a high sheriff . Comparable territorial units in England are the local ceremonial counties . Wales is divided into eight Preserved Counties:

The eight Preserved Counties of Wales largely correspond to the eight counties that were newly formed in Wales in 1974 and served as administrative counties until 1996. The following table shows the membership of the 22 current Welsh Unitary Authorities in the Preserved Counties.
