Caerphilly ( Welsh Caerffili ) is a city in Wales , Great Britain with 31,060 inhabitants (2001).

Caerphilly is the eponymous and largest city of the Caerphilly administrative district . It is located in the Rhymney Valley in the South Wales coal region about eleven kilometers north of Cardiff . It is known for its medieval fortress - a moated castle called Caerphilly Castle . The city is also the place of origin and namesake of the Caerphilly cheese , which is also the occasion for the Big Cheese Festival , which takes place every summer and which has attracted up to 80,000 visitors in recent years.

Town twinning

Caerphilly maintains a town twinning with Ludwigsburg , which was established in 1960. Further partnerships exist: since 1991 with the French town of Lannion in Brittany and since 1994 with the Czech town of Písek .
