Aaron James Ramsey (born December 26, 1990 in Caerphilly ) is a Welsh football player and former captain of the Welsh national football team . As a versatile midfielder, he has been in the squad of the Italian record champions Juventus Turin since the start of the 2019/20 season .

Cardiff City

As a child, Ramsey attended the comprehensive school "Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni" in his home town of Caerphilly. Before he finally devoted himself to football, he was a promising rugby union player as a student . He was part of the youth department of Caerphilly RFC as a winger and was already in the focus of talent scouts from the renowned rugby league club St Helens RLFC , especially after he had played a game against St Helens with a good performance.

For the first time in football, Aaron Ramsey drew attention to himself during a tournament for the Welsh youth organization Urdd Gobaith Cymru . There the eight-year-old student appeared so positive that both the capital club Cardiff City and Newcastle United from the north-east of England tried to include Ramsey in their own youth department. Ramsey ultimately stayed in his home country and worked his way through the youth teams up to the first team, for which he made his debut on the last day of the 2006/07 season in a second division home game against Hull City . With his appearance on April 28, 2007, at the age of 16 years and 124 days, he also became the youngest player in Cardiff City's history - before that, John Toshack had held the record. A short time later, in June 2007, his club turned down a £ 1 million offer from a London- based Premier League club. The exact interested party remained unknown for the time being, but it was considered certain that Ramsey was always under observation of this club in the further course. The Everton subsequently received a rejection with a comparable transfer fee; the sum to be paid to Cardiff City should be based closely on Ramsey's development of the "Toffees".

Ramsey made his league debut in a 2-1 home win over Burnley FC when he was substituted on for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on October 6, 2007 at a late stage in the game. In December 2007 Ramsey signed his first professional contract with Cardiff City and only a short time later he was in the FA Cup against the lower class FC Chasetown for Stephen McPhail for the first time on January 5, 2008 . With a good performance and a header goal, he played his way into the election for the best player of the cup round in the 3-1 away win, which was finally won by Michael Mifsud from Coventry City . Also in the championship three weeks later he was in the starting line-up for the first time and after the 3-1 win against Queens Park Rangers he continuously worked out a regular place in the team. Overall, Ramsey, who his teammates gave the nickname " Rambo ", played 22 games in the 2007/08 season and was mainly in five of six FA Cup games. This also included playing in the 2007/08 FA Cup final against Portsmouth FC at Wembley Stadium , which was lost 1-0.

After a good performance at Ramsey 2: 0 quarter-final victory against Middlesbrough FC was previously known, is that Alex Ferguson of Manchester United in the young Welsh talent interested revealed and the possibility of a change to Cardiff coach Dave Jones had discussed. With United, Everton FC and Arsenal FC, three top-class Premier League clubs fought a “tug of war” over Ramsey. This ended with Ramsey moving to Arsenal for a fee of five million British pounds. A previously discussed clause that would provide for a direct loan deal back to Cardiff City for the 2008/09 season was not negotiated.

Arsenal FC

On June 10, 2008, Ramsey's move to Arsenal was confirmed after discussions with officials from Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton. The contract, which Ramsey signed on June 13, 2008, contained a "long-term" term, according to Arsenal FC. The personal approach of his coach Arsène Wenger , who had Aaron Ramsey and his family flown to Switzerland to discuss the future plans and individual career opportunities of the talent, was an important argument in favor of Arsenal's acceptance. For the 2008/09 season, Ramsey received the number 16 jersey that had been worn by defensive midfielder Mathieu Flamini before he moved to AC Milan .

On October 21, 2008 Ramsey made his Champions League debut for Arsenal in the 5-2 away win over Fenerbahçe Istanbul , where he succeeded immediately after being substituted in the 73rd minute for Abou Diaby . On August 22, 2009, after being substituted on for Cesc Fàbregas at halftime , the youngster scored in a 4-1 win over Portsmouth FC . This was his first Premier League goal for the capital club. During the game against Stoke City on February 27, 2010 Ramsey suffered a double fractured tibia and fibula after a foul by Ryan Shawcross . Shawcross received the red card for this.

On November 25, 2010 Ramsey moved on loan to the English second division club Nottingham Forest to collect match practice again after his serious injury. The loan deal ended on January 3, 2011. Ramsey came to five league appearances. After briefly returning to Arsenal, he moved to his former club Cardiff City on loan in late January 2011 .

Since the 2011/2012 season, Ramsey has been part of the regular staff again and also played 34 league games this season. In 2012/2013 this number even increased to 36 league games. But there was a lot of criticism for Arsene Wenger, who put Aaron Ramsey on again and again despite poor performance. He is the Gunners' top scorer this season with 13 goals.

In the FA Cup final against Hull City on May 17, 2014, Ramsey scored the decisive 3-2 in the second half of extra time and ended a 9-year lean period for Arsenal FC without a title win. As fourth of the Premier League 2013/14 Arsenal reached the qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2014/15 , in which the Gunners prevailed with a single against Beşiktaş Istanbul , the third of Turkey and reached the group stage. In this they finished second behind the German runner-up Borussia Dortmund only because of the worse goal difference . Ramsey scored a fifth of the Gunners' goals. In the round of 16 they lost the home game against French runners-up AS Monaco with 1: 3. They then won the second leg in Monaco 2-0, but were eliminated due to the away goals rule . In 2014/15 , Arsenal qualified third in the championship for the group stage of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League and defended the FA Cup with a 4-0 final victory over Aston Villa . Arsenal started with defeats against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos Piraeus , but then won 2-0 against the German champions FC Bayern Munich . They lost the second leg 14 days later but with 1: 5, with Ramsey missing due to injury. With wins in the second legs, in which Ramsey played again against the other two clubs, Arsenal reached the second round in second place in the group. But here they lost both games against defending champions FC Barcelona . In the Premier League 2015/16 the Gunners were runner-up behind the surprise champions Leicester City , but were ten points behind Leicester and only one point ahead of local rivals Tottenham . In the FA Cup 2015/16 they failed this time in the quarterfinals by a 1: 2 home defeat at newly promoted Watford FC , where Ramsey was absent due to injury.

Juventus Turin

In February 2019, the Gunners announced that the Welshman would move to the Italian first division club Juventus Turin at the end of the 2018/19 Premier League season after eleven years in their service .

National team

The multiple Welsh U-17 international made his name in August 2007 as the youngest player in Wales' U-21 history . In the game, Wales beat the Swedish U-21 youth team 4-3. For the friendly against Iceland on May 28, 2008 Ramsey was even in the A-team . There he was not used as a reserve player. His first appearance in the senior national team he had on November 19, 2008 in the friendly against Denmark , where he was in the starting line-up but was substituted in the 88th minute. He was also used in the next ten games, but only five times over 90 minutes. In the tenth game he also scored his first international goal against Liechtenstein on October 14, 2009, with which he scored the 2-0 final score in the last game of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup . As fourth in their qualifying group, the Welsh could not qualify for the World Cup. He also scored a goal in the following friendly against Scotland , this time making it 3-0. Due to a broken leg in February 2010, he missed all games in 2010.

When he was used again on March 26, 2011 in a 2-0 draw against England in qualifying for the Euro 2012 , he was allowed to wear the captain's armband for the first time . This makes him the youngest captain in the history of the Welsh national football team . In the next game, two months later on May 25, 2011 in the Nations Cup against Scotland, he was not in the starting line-up and Robert Earnshaw wore the armband for the only time. Ramsey was only brought on in the 60th minute. In the next games until September 2012, in which he was absent only once due to injury, he wore the captain's armband again.

In the summer of 2012, Ramsey was appointed as one of five Welsh players, including Ryan Giggs , who had not played an international match since 2007, in the otherwise English-only squad of the British football team that hosted the 2012 Olympic Games in London represented. He was used in all four games, but failed with the team in the quarter-finals on penalties against South Korea . He first scored the goal with a penalty in the 36th minute to make it 1-1 and was then able to convert the first penalty for the British in the penalty shoot-out.

After wearing the captain's armband for Wales three more times after the Olympic Games, Ashley Williams took over the post in October 2012 and Ramsey was then only captain three times in autumn 2013 when Williams did not take part.

A special game for Ramsey was March 22, 2013: in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , the Welsh met Scotland for the 107th time and Ramsey received a yellow card in the third minute of stoppage time in the first half after the Scots one minute earlier scored the first goal, then scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute from a penalty and received the red card in the fifth minute when the score was 2-1 for Wales . He was suspended for the next qualifying game and was not used in the following friendly game. In total, he made eight appearances in this unsuccessful qualification, in which he scored three goals.

Things went better for the Welsh in qualifying for Euro 2016 , where he was only missing twice due to an injury. As second behind Belgium , although they missed the group win due to the only defeat on the penultimate matchday in the away game against Bosnia and Herzegovina , they reached the European Championship finals for the first time and for the first time since the 1958 World Cup again a major football tournament.

He was then included in the Wales squad for the European Football Championship , despite muscle injuries sustained in November 2015 and March 2016, which caused him to miss the three test matches after successful qualification, as did Joe Ledley , who broke his fibula in March Appointed in France in 2016 . In the opening win against Slovakia , he was in the starting line-up and prepared the winning goal in the 81st minute from substitute Hal Robson-Kanu . He also played over 90 minutes in the subsequent 2-1 loss to England with a goal in stoppage time. In the last group game, in which the Welsh won their first victory against Russia , he scored the 1-0 opening goal in the 11th minute and gave Gareth Bale the template for the 3-0 final score in the 67th minute . The Welsh reached the round of 16 as group winners before England. In this they were able to eliminate Northern Ireland in the first British duel in the knockout round, benefiting from an own goal by Northern Irish defender Gareth McAuley . In the quarter-finals they were able to prevail 3-1 against favored Belgians , whereby he gave the template for two goals but received the second yellow card . Therefore, he was suspended in the semi-finals against Portugal . His teammates could not compensate for his failure and lost 2-0 to the eventual European champions. After the tournament, he was nominated as one of two Welsh men for the team of the tournament .

Others

Since 2011, Aaron Ramsey has been associated in the media with a phenomenon according to which a famous personality dies a few days later after one of his hits, the so-called Ramsey Effect . His first "victim" is said to have been Osama bin Laden , who was killed on May 1, 2011 , the day after Ramsey's goal against Manchester United . Other deaths such as Steve Jobs , Whitney Houston , Paul Walker, Robin Williams and Chester Bennington have also been linked to Ramsey's hits.

Most of the tabloids in German-speaking countries write about the Ramsey Effect .
