Gareth Frank Bale (born July 16, 1989 in Cardiff ) is a Welsh football player . He is under contract with Real Madrid .

Bale began his professional career at Southampton FC as a left-back, where he became known as a free-kick specialist . Tottenham Hotspur bought him in 2007 ; there he played an offensive part more and more often. In the 2009/10 season, Bale was one of the team's most important players, and during the Champions League season he attracted international attention. In 2011 and 2013 he was awarded the PFA Players' Player of the Year, and he was also part of the UEFA Team of the Year in those years .

Bale received a lot of praise in Great Britain from colleagues and coaches, who attested him outstanding qualities such as speed, crosses, a strong left foot and physically strong skills.

On September 1, 2013, Bale moved to Real Madrid . According to Florentino Pérez , he cost Real Madrid 91 million euros, and not a three-digit sum of 100 million euros as reported by the media. However, a published document by Football Leaks suggests that the transfer fee was just over € 100 million. Whether the transfer is now the third or fourth most expensive, before or after that of Cristiano Ronaldo with 94 million euros, and definitely after that of Paul Pogba with 105 million euros, is therefore controversial.

Private life

Gareth Bale was born in 1989 in Cardiff, the capital and largest city of Wales. He attended Eglwys Newydd Primary School in Whitchurch in north Cardiff. There he first sparked the interest of Southampton FC at the age of nine when he played in a six-on-six tournament with his first club, Cardiff Civil Service Football Club .

Bale attended Whitchurch High School in Cardiff, which also went to other prominent athletes such as Sam Warburton and Geraint Thomas . An avid athlete, he played soccer, rugby , hockey and excelled in athletics as well. Because of his football superiority over his classmates, special rules were imposed on him. For example, he was not allowed to shoot with his left foot and only touch the ball a limited number of times. During his time in Whitchurch he trained at the Southamptons Satellite Academy in Bath, although due to his size there were initially doubts whether Southampton FC would even give a scholarship. At the age of 16, he helped his school's U-18 team win the Cardiff & Vale Senior Cup. He left school in the summer of 2005 and was recognized by the sports department for his service in sports.

Bale lives with his childhood sweetheart Emma Rhys-Jones and has two daughters and a son with her. In July 2018, the couple canceled their planned summer marriage for fear of being attacked by a drug gang. Bale's future father-in-law had been incarcerated in the United States for several years for investment fraud and had only recently been released from prison. After an arson attack on Emma Rhys-Jones's aunt's house in Wales in 2016, the family was suspected the following year of stealing £ 750,000, watches and cocaine from a drug gang. Some of the money was later found on Emma Rhys-Jones's uncle, who was acquitted in May 2018. The wedding should be rescheduled in 2019.

Southampton FC

Bale made his debut for Southampton FC in the Football League Championship on April 17, 2006 , when he was on the field for the full 90 minutes. He is the youngest player in the club's history. Four months later, on August 6, he scored his first goal for Southampton from a free kick. After strong appearances in the team, he was voted Football League Young Player of the Year in March 2007 . His achievements aroused the interest of various large clubs.

Starting difficulties and breakthrough (2007-2010)

Bale before a game against Chelsea

On May 25, 2007, Bale signed a four-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur , which transferred around 14 million euros to Southampton for him.

Bale made his debut on July 12, 2007 in the friendly against St Patrick's Athletic for Spurs. He played his first competitive game for his new club on August 26th in the Premier League against Manchester United . In his second game for Spurs, he scored his first goal in a 3: 3 against Fulham on September 1, 2007. Shortly afterwards, Bale was able to hit a direct free kick in the derby against Arsenal .

On December 2, 2007, Bale suffered in the game against Birmingham City after a foul by Fabrice Muamba a torn ankle ligament that put him out of action for the remainder of the season. Although he recovered faster and had already recovered in February, he was spared until the end of the season. In August 2008, Bale signed a new four-year deal with Tottenham. He was given the number 3 on his back, which Lee Young-pyo had previously worn. However, after some very poor performance, he lost his regular place to Benoît Assou-Ekotto , who kept him until the end of the season.

In June 2009, Bale underwent knee surgery after which he was out for more than two months. He missed pre-season and the first few weeks of the 2009-10 season . On September 26, he made his comeback when he was substituted on during Tottenham's 5-0 victory over Burnley FC in the 85th minute. This was Bale's first involvement in a Premier League win, having previously set a record 24 winless league games for Spurs. However, like a season before, he spent a lot of time on the bench, as rival Assou-Ekotto was in good shape. When he was injured, however, coach Harry Redknapp gave Bale a chance that he knew how to use in an impressive 4-0 win in the FA Cup against Peterborough United .

Subsequently, Bale was able to maintain his good form and was voted player of the round in the sixth round of the FA Cup in a 3-1 win against Fulham. In April 2010 he scored both the winning goal in the North London Derby against Arsenal and against the leaders and eventual champions Chelsea FC within four days . He was elected Barclays Player of the Month April and signed a new four-year contract at White Hart Lane on May 7, 2010 , after the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time .

Promotion to top player (2010–2012)

On August 21, 2010, Bale scored twice in a 2-1 win at Stoke City . He scored the later goal of the month in August with a head-high volley shot into the top right corner of the goal . On August 25, Bale put on all four goals in the 4-0 second leg of the Champions League qualification against Young Boys Bern and thus contributed to the fact that the Spurs after a 2: 3 in the first leg still for the finals Premier class qualified. Benoît Assou-Ekotto returned from his injury, but Bale moved up to the position in left midfield, so that both found their way into the starting line-up. On September 29, 2010, Bale scored his first Champions League goal in the group game against Twente Enschede . He was then voted Welsh Player of the Year by the FAW .

On October 20, 2010, Bale scored a flawless hat trick in the Champions League game against Inter Milan at San Siro in the second half , but Tottenham lost the game 3-4. In the second leg at White Hart Lane on November 2, Bale was named Man of the Match . In this game he managed many dangerous individual actions and cross runs and he prepared the goals of Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko .

Bale (right) in a duel with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Champions League

Although Tottenham reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, in which they were eliminated against Real Madrid, it was only fifth in the league, so that the renewed participation in the premier class Bale and his team was denied. On November 4, 2010, Bale stated that he would stay with Tottenham for the remainder of his contract, which ran until 2014, despite interest from other clubs. On March 19, 2011, he extended his contract to 2015. On April 17, 2011, Bale was voted PFA Player of the Year by his colleagues .

In the 2011/12 season , Bale and Harry Redknapp's team delighted experts and fans alike. Bale scored ten goals, including three braces. At the end of the season, however, the entry into the Champions League was missed again, as Chelsea, by winning it as sixth place in the league, pushed the fourth from his starting place. Bale was named UEFA Team of the Year in 2011 and was named Barclays Player of the Month for the second time in his career in January 2012 .

On June 27, 2012, Bale signed a new four-year contract and committed to 2016. Before the 2012/13 season , Bale's shirt number was changed from 3 to 11, as he was not a left-back and therefore asked the club for a number appropriate to his position.

On September 29, Bale marked the 2-0 game against Manchester United, helping Tottenham to a 3-2 win, the Spurs' first at Old Trafford since 1989. On Boxing Day 2012 he scored his first Premier League hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa .

In the second half of the season, Bale acted more centrally, so that his goal threat was even more effective. He scored twelve goals in 14 games between the 24th and 38th matchday of the 2012/13 season. He also decided on February 14, 2013 in the second round of the UEFA Europa League the game against Olympique Lyon with two direct free kicks. In the 90th minute of the last game of the season, Bale scored 1-0 against AFC Sunderland with a precise shot from 25 yards and boosted his club's point account to 72 points - a new record in the club's Premier League history from north London. However, since Arsenal won 1-0 against Newcastle United at the same time, the win was not enough and they again missed participation in the Champions League.

Bale was named Footballer of the Month for February 2013 for his accomplishments and his goals against Norwich and West Ham were named Goals of the Month for January and February. In addition, he was elected Footballer of the Year in England in the young professional poll and for the second time in the player poll. A week later he was also named Player of the Year by the FWA (Football Writers Association). So far, with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007, only one other player had won all three titles in one year. He was also voted eighth in the European Footballer of the Year election. Gareth Bale scored 31 goals and 17 assists in all competitions in the 2012/13 season.

real Madrid

On September 1, 2013, Bale moved to the Spanish record champions Real Madrid . He signed a six-year contract until June 30, 2019. The transfer fee is still controversial today. According to media reports, it was initially estimated at up to 100 million euros, which would have made it the most expensive transfer in football history. From the contract between Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, however, the official transfer fee of 78,171,930 pounds should emerge, as the newspaper Marca reported. That would correspond to about 92 million euros, which would make it only the second most expensive transfer in history, behind Cristiano Ronaldo. However, confusion about it arose from the payment modalities. Both clubs agreed on an installment payment. The total amount including interest rose to almost 100 million euros, which, however, did not affect the transfer fee. However, publications by Football Leaks suggest that Bale was more expensive than Ronaldo, namely € 100,759,418.

The first half of his debut 2013/14 season was marked by injuries: Bale missed five of the first 16 competitive games and was substituted on or off in six others. In his league debut on matchday four against Villarreal , he scored a goal. On matchday 15, he scored his first hat trick in a 4-0 win over Real Valladolid . With his strike partners Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo , he then formed a series of dangerous attacks, dubbed the BBC by the media . In the final of the Copa del Rey 2013/14 Bale scored the 2-1 winning goal against arch rivals FC Barcelona in the 85th minute after going it alone, celebrating his first title win in the dress of the royal team . In the Champions League , Bale scored six times in twelve appearances and once again made a decisive contribution to his team's title win with his goal to take the 2-1 lead in the extension of the final against Atlético Madrid . In total, the Welshman made 44 competitive games and 22 goals that season.

In the 2014/15 season , Bale played another 48 competitive games and scored 17 goals. Although the main titles have been missed, he helped Real Madrid with an assist of to win the UEFA Super Cup and a Finaltor to victory in the FIFA Club World Cup . In the 2015/16 season he scored four goals in one game for the first time in his career in a 10-2 win against Rayo Vallecano . On March 20 2016 he scored his 43rd goal in the Primera División and replaced Gary Lineker than most prolific British league history from. Various injuries meant that he could only play 31 competitive games that season. With 19 goals, he still had a high hit rate. In the Champions League final , Bale and his club faced city rivals Atlético again. He was in the starting XI and was one of the successful shooters in the victorious penalty shoot-out, whereupon he won the handlebar for the second time.

On October 30, 2016, Bale prematurely extended his contract to June 2022. On November 22, 2016, he suffered an ankle injury and was out for four months. As a result, he played 27 competitive games even less than last year and scored only nine goals. Regardless, he won the Spanish championship for the first time with Real Madrid in the 2016/17 season . In addition, the club moved back to the final of the Champions League , which was held in Bale's hometown of Cardiff . He reported fit in time for the game and came on as a substitute in the 77th minute. With a 4-1 win in the final, Real Madrid became the first club of the Champions League era to defend their title.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Bale won the UEFA Super Cup for the third time and the Supercopa de España for the first time . The third club world title followed in December. Although he improved his stake and hit rate again and scored 21 goals in 39 competitive games, he expressed his displeasure with coach Zinédine Zidane and the, in his opinion, too short playing times. In the final of the Champions League he was again not in the starting lineup. After being substituted on, he became the match winner with two goals for a 3-1 win against Liverpool . In particular, the goal to 2-1 with an overhead kick made headlines worldwide. He won the fourth Champions League title in five years. After the game, he was named Man of the Match and announced talks with his agent because he has to be on the pitch every weekend and doesn't want to be a substitute. After the season, however, coach Zidane resigned and Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Juventus Turin . This paved the way for Bale to step out of Ronaldo's shadow and become the club's new leader.

Under new coach Julen Lopetegui , Bale was seeded at the start of the 2018/19 season and he scored one goal in each of the first three games of the season. Then the club got into a serious crisis. After the layoffs of Lopetegui and his successor Santiago Solari three months before the end of the season, all title chances were lost. In addition, after injuries at the beginning of 2019, Bale had slipped back into the role of substitute under Solari. At the latest when Zinédine Zidane returned as head coach in March 2019, Bale's future in Madrid was questioned. In addition to his susceptibility to injury, the media and fellow players accused him of a lack of willingness to integrate, as after more than five years at the club he still did not speak any Spanish and avoided team evenings in order to fly to his home country and play golf instead.

Before the 2019/20 season , Zidane clearly suggested a club change to Bale. Negotiations with interested associations like Jiangsu Suning failed, however. In the 3-1 win against Celta Vigo in the first league game of the season, Bale was in the starting line-up and prepared the opening goal. After the game, Zidane announced that Bale would stay at Real Madrid. In the further course of the season he was only considered sporadically by Zidane. Thereupon there were again expressions of displeasure from Bale. Even after the restart of the season, which was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he was in the squad nine times in the last eleven league games and was substituted on or off once. In total, he played 16 league games during the season and scored two goals. With Real Madrid he won the championship title for the second time at the end of the season.

National team

Bale in the Wales shirt in the European Championship qualifier against Belgium, 2015

Bale is part of the Welsh national football team . He made his debut on May 27, 2006 at the age of 16 years and 315 days in a test match in Graz ( Austria ) against the selection from Trinidad and Tobago . This made him the youngest Welsh international until then, before Harry Wilson replaced him on his international debut against Belgium on October 15, 2013 at the age of 16 years and 207 days. On October 7, 2006 in the European Championship qualifier against Slovakia , Bale scored his first goal in the national dress and became the youngest goalscorer for the Welsh national team and youngest goalscorer in the European Championship qualifiers.

Because of his grandmother's origins, he would have been able to play for the English national team. But in 2007 he said:

"It is an honor to play for Wales… Nobody ever got in touch with me personally from England, only through my agent."

"It's an honor to play for Wales ... No English manager has ever contacted me personally, only through my agent."

In October 2015 , Bale qualified with the national team for the Euro 2016 in France . It was the Welsh's first participation in a European Championship finals and - after the 1958 World Cup - their second participation in an international tournament. He was accepted into the squad of Wales and scored Wales ' first European Championship goal with a direct free kick in the 10th minute in the opening game against Slovakia. Then he also scored against England and with his third goal in the third game at the EM he sealed the 3-0 final result in the game against Russia. The Welsh reached the round of 16 as group winners before England. In the knockout games, he advanced with the team to the semi-finals and was only eliminated there against Portugal. In the election for European Footballer of the Year 2016, he subsequently took third place.

Style of play

Early in his Tottenham Hotspur career, he was often used as a left-back . Later, however, his coach Harry Redknapp used Benoît Assou-Ekotto as a left-back and moved Bale into left midfield, where he could live out his speed and offensive urge better and more safely and formed a wing tong with Aaron Lennon . In this position, he performed the role of a classic winger who worked the sideline and worked forward across flanks. Since 2012 he has been used under André Villas-Boas as a hanging tip and with a lot of tactical freedom, which allows him to play off his creativity and goal threat even better in addition to his speed and technique.

At Real Madrid he mostly plays on the right wing.

Trademark

On March 26, 2013, Bale submitted an application to the Intellectual Property Office (IPO, UK patent and trademark office ) to have his goal celebration protected as a figurative mark. The logo should consist of a heart that he forms with the thumb and forefingers of both hands when he celebrates a goal, in conjunction with his number 11.
