Two weeks later, on November 12th, he played his premiere game in the League Cup . At that time he was called up by trainer Roy Keane in the starting lineup. The game was lost 1: 2. After Keane was fired in December 2008, Henderson was no longer used. In January 2009, the AFC officials decided to lend the young talent to Coventry City for a month . Soon after, the loan deal was changed so that the midfielder stayed in Coventry until the end of the season. Henderson was injured during the loan deal and was out for a long time. In total, he came to 13 competitive games in the Football League Championship for Coventry.
In 2009/10 he finally made his breakthrough at Sunderland. Behind attacker Darren Bent , he played the second most Premier League games on the team. As a reward for his development, the club extended his contract in October 2009. In his first full season at Sunderland, he finished 13th with his team in the top English football class. After the summer break of 2010, the midfielder was given the jersey with the number 10, that of the playmaker. Henderson was also an important pillar in the team and top performer in the 2010/11 season . This ultimately aroused the desire of the top English clubs. His contract with the AFC was valid until 2015. During the 2011 summer break, Henderson finally moved to Liverpool .
