Kenneth "Kenny" Burns (born September 23, 1953 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player , who was best known for his time at Nottingham Forest .
Birmingham City
Kenny Burns started his career as a professional footballer at Birmingham City in 1971 , where he initially worked as a defender. After Bob Latchford moved to Everton in 1974 , he took over his position in attack and was also able to convince there. After rising in his first season in Birmingham , Burns acted in the first division from the 1972/73 season . In the years to come, his team found themselves mostly in the lower third of the table and often had to tremble for relegation. After the 1976/77 season Burns decided to move to Nottingham Forest , which had just achieved promotion to the first division.
Nottingham Forest
In the Football League First Division 1977/78 his team achieved the sensation of winning the championship before Liverpool FC as a promoted team. The team was coached by Brian Clough , with whom Forest had its most successful period in the club's history at the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s. Kenny Burns, now back as a defender, formed the central defense together with Larry Lloyd and thus laid the foundation for the championship team. As a special honor he was elected English Footballer of the Year 1978. The following season was also very successful and finished with 2nd place in the Football League First Division 1978/79 and winning the National Champion Cup in 1979 . In the final, the Swedish champions Malmö FF were defeated 1-0 in Munich . Trevor Francis scored the winning goal . A year later, the title was defended in the National Champion Cup in 1980 with a 1-0 win against the German champions Hamburger SV . Other titles in these years were two successes in the League Cup and a success in the European Supercup 1979 against FC Barcelona . Kenny Burns scored the decisive equalizer to make it 1-1 in the second leg in Barcelona . After the 1980/81 season, he wanted to face a new challenge and signed a contract with Leeds United .
Leeds United
Burns joined his new club for a fee of £ 400,000. The start for Leeds was not exactly promising, as the club was relegated to the second division as third from bottom at the end of the season. His team did not manage to get promoted back to the First Division in the next two years and Kenny Burns did not develop as usual in his new team. Consequently, he decided to change clubs again and joined the third division Derby County .
Derby County
After the season for Derby in the Third Division , with an interim loan deal to Notts County , Burns decided to move again. He was used regularly in the past season and wanted to prove himself again in a higher league. His path therefore led him to the second division club Barnsley . With Barnsley he spent the coming year in the middle of the table and made 21 league appearances. Now almost 33 years old, he spent the next few years after a short trip to IF Elfsborg as a player-coach at various amateur clubs. In 1993 he finally ended his career.
