Frans Thijssen (born January 23, 1952 in Malden ) is a former Dutch football player .
Career
Thijssen began his career in the Dutch honor division in 1970 at NEC Nijmegen . The strong midfielder made his breakthrough in Dutch football after moving to FC Twente Enschede in 1973 . With Enschede he made it into the UEFA Cup final in 1975 , which the Dutch lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach .
However, he did not become a Dutch national player until 1979 when he moved to Ipswich Town in the English Premier League . Together with his compatriot Arnold Mühren , he played a key role in the rise of the English provincial club, which culminated in the 1981 UEFA Cup victory against AZ Alkmaar . In the same year he was also voted England's Footballer of the Year . It was the first time since the German goalkeeper Bert Trautmann that a player from the continent had received this honor. For the Dutch national team , Thijssen took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy .
In 1983 Thijssen moved to Nottingham Forest . However, his career seemed to be drawing to a close and he couldn't really gain a foothold here. He moved to the Vancouver Whitecaps in January 1984 to end his career there. This was to be delayed after his move back to the Netherlands in 1985 to the provincial club Fortuna Sittard . He changed twice and played 1987 / 1988 at FC Groningen and 1988 bis 1991 at Vitesse Arnhem before he finally ended his career.
