Arnold Mühren (born June 2, 1951 in Volendam ) is a former Dutch football player . He played in midfield . Mühren is one of the few players who could win all three European cups. Today he works as a youth coach for midfielders at the Ajax Amsterdam football school.

Career

Mühren began his professional career in 1970 at FC Volendam . The following season he was signed by Ajax Amsterdam , where he quickly joined the star ensemble around Johan Cruyff , Johan Neeskens and Arie Haan . In the three years at Ajax, Mühren was able to win five different national and international titles. The year 1972 was particularly successful, when the team became Dutch champions , cup winners , European championship champions , UEFA Super Cup winners and World Cup winners . In 1974 the midfielder moved to league rivals Twente Enschede . With Enschede he won the "KNVB-Beker" (Dutch Cup) in 1977. A year later, in 1978, he went to England to Ipswich Town . With the Tractor Boys Mühren reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1981 , where you could defeat AZ Alkmaar 3-0 and 2-4. In 1982 he moved to Manchester United ; In 1985 he returned to his home in Ajax Amsterdam.

National team

Mühren was already in the squad of the Dutch national team at the 1974 World Cup , but was not used. In 1988, at the age of 37, he was again part of the Oranje Elftal squad . With the national team he won the European championship title at the European Championships in Germany in 1988 . In the final against the USSR , Mühren provided the template for Marco van Basten , who scored the 2-0 with a brilliant volley. After the European Championship he ended his active career. He played a total of 23 times in Oranje .

Trivia

His older brother Gerrie was also a professional footballer. The bassist of the same name from the Dutch pop group The Cats is his cousin.
