Jan Jacobus Wouters (born July 17, 1960 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch football coach and former football player .
Player career
In the club
At the age of 20, Wouters received a licensed player contract with the first division club FC Utrecht , his home club. Already in his first year the midfielder came to regular appearances and with the third place at the end of the season he achieved the best result with his team to date. In the following year he finally prevailed and became a regular player. In 1985 he won his first national title, the KNVB Cup , with the team . In the summer of 1986 he was poached by the top Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam . There Wouters became a regular player and top performer straight away. In 1990 - for four years without a championship title - this was won. In the same year he was named Footballer of the Year in the Netherlands . In the fall of 1991 Wouters turned his back on the honor division and moved abroad. In Germany he signed with FC Bayern Munich , for which he was active for two years. He made his Bundesliga debut on November 23, 1991 (19th match day) in a 1-0 home win over Karlsruher SC . Three game days later he scored his first league goal in the jersey of the Munich team. In the 3-1 home win on December 14th against Fortuna Düsseldorf , Wouters scored the 2-1 lead. In the following season, Wouters played 33 games and scored four times. After the 1993/94 season , Bayern became German champions. However, Wouters had already moved to PSV Eindhoven after the winter break, after 16 games (1 goal) . With PSV , Wouters was again the Dutch Cup winner and finally ended his active career in 1996.
National team
Already in 1982 Wouters became a national player of the Netherlands . He had to wait until 1988 for his first major tournament . In Germany, the team secured the title of European champion with a 2-0 victory in the final over the Soviet Union . Wouters completed each of the five games and formed the Dutch midfield with Ruud Gullit , Arnold Mühren and Gerald Vanenburg . At the 1990 World Cup , Wouters was also in the squad and was also used in the famous round of 16 game against West Germany , which they lost 2-1. Also in 1992 he was appointed to the Oranje squad by national coach Rinus Michels . In the semifinals they failed at the eventual winner Denmark . In 1994 Wouters came to his second World Cup and was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Brazil .

Coaching career
After his active time, Wouters switched to the coaching business. After working as an assistant and youth coach at FC Utrecht and Ajax Amsterdam , he moved to Scotland , where he became Dick Advocaat's assistant for the Glasgow Rangers . In the same role, he also looked after the Dutch national soccer team at the 2004 European soccer championships . After coach Ronald Koeman switched to Valencia CF, Wouters was temporarily promoted from assistant coach to head coach of PSV Eindhoven. At the beginning of 2008, Sef Vergoossen took over this role and Jan Wouters became assistant coach again. In summer 2009 he returned to FC Utrecht, where he worked as an assistant to Ton du Chatinier . After his termination at the end of the 2010/11 season, Wouters took over the training management on May 19, 2011. In the summer of 2011 he was followed by Erwin Koeman , who was replaced by Wouters in November 2011.
For one season he accompanied the Turkish first division club Kasımpaşa Istanbul as an assistant coach and youth coordinator and assisted the head coach Schota Arweladze . After he resigned as head coach in March 2015, Wouters took over this position on an interim basis. A few days later, the club appointed him head coach until the end of the season. On April 14, 2015, Wouters was released and his successor was Önder Özen .
