Johannes Franciscus "Hans" van Breukelen (born October 4, 1956 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch football goalkeeper .

Career

Van Breukelen played with FC Utrecht , Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven during his active career . He also made 73 international appearances for the Dutch national team. He took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy , the 1988 European Championship in Germany , the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 1992 European Championship in Sweden . With the Dutch national team he won the European title in 1988.

Van Breukelen was known as a penalty killer who saved penalties in numerous important games, including in the final of the European Football Championship in 1988, when he parried a self-inflicted penalty against Igor Belanov shortly before the end . He recorded on index cards which corner the best European penalty takers usually shoot into.

FC Utrecht

Hans van Breukelen started his professional career in the 1976/77 season for FC Utrecht . In the following season he made the leap to the goalkeeper. Under coach Han Berger , the club was also successful in the Eredivisie . 1979/80 the team finished fifth in the table and qualified for the 1980/81 UEFA Cup . There Utrecht failed in the second round 2: 1 and 1: 3 to Eintracht Frankfurt . The following year led the team from Utrecht to third place in the table and thus to the best placement for many years. Participation in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup led to a duel with Hamburger SV in the first round . After the 1-0 win in the first leg in Hamburg, however, a 3-6 home defeat followed in the second leg in Arnhem and thus the premature end. In the season 1981/82 van Breukelen reached the final of the KNVB Cup with teammates like Jan Wouters and Frans Adelaar , but lost it clearly against AZ Alkmaar in two games . In the championship van Breukelen finished fifth with his teammates and qualified again for the European Cup. After this season, the English first division club Nottingham Forest signed him for £ 200,000 as the successor to the English goalkeeper Peter Shilton .

Nottingham Forest

In his first season for the new club, he came due to an injury to only 25 league games, but reached a fifth place with his team and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . The club was coached by Brian Clough , who sensationally led Forest to the English championship in 1978 as a climber. Then Nottingham Forest won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1978/79 and 1979/80 under Clough and his congenial assistant coach Peter Taylor . In the 1983/84 season there were 36 appearances for van Breukelen at the end of the season, plus 8 appearances in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup , in which Nottingham only failed in the semifinals under dubious circumstances at RSC Anderlecht from Belgium. In the league a very good third place in the table was achieved and thus the renewed participation in the UEFA Cup. Van Breukelen's teammates during these two years were Steve Hodge , Ian Bowyer , John Robertson , Colin Todd and Viv Anderson . Despite these successes, van Breukelen decided to return to the Netherlands and moved to PSV Eindhoven . From the same club, Forest signed the 22-year-old Hans Segers, his potential successor.

PSV Eindhoven

In his first season for the new club he reached the runner-up behind Ajax Amsterdam and thus participation in the UEFA Cup 1984/85 , where Eindhoven, however, surprisingly failed in the second round to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . The 1985/86 season led van Breukelen's team to the first Dutch championship in eight years. The traditional rival Ajax Amsterdam was relegated to second place by a clear margin. The appearance in the European Cup in 1986/87 was disappointing , in which the team failed in the first round against the German champions and later finalists FC Bayern Munich . In 1987 PSV Eindhoven was able to confidently defend its title. In 34 league games, the team only lost twice and conceded only 21 goals. Ruud Gullit moved to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan after the season . Van Breukelen experienced the high point of his club career in the national championship cup in 1988 , in which Eindhoven reached the final after victories over Galatasaray Istanbul , SK Rapid Wien , Girondins Bordeaux and Real Madrid and won the title there after a penalty shoot-out against Benfica Lisbon .

Together with his team-mates Ronald Koeman , Gerald Vanenburg , Søren Lerby , Wim Kieft and Eric Gerets , as well as coach Guus Hiddink , van Breukelen also celebrated the greatest success in the history of PSV Eindhoven in front of 70,000 spectators in Stuttgart. In 1988 and 1989, the club won the Dutch championship again, with four titles in a row. The team was also successful in the Dutch Cup , where they won the title three times in a row with a 3-2 win against Roda JC in 1988 , a 4-1 win against FC Groningen in 1989 and a 1-0 win against Vitesse Arnheim in 1990 . In the European Cup of National Champions in 1988/89 , the end came in the quarter-finals against the Spanish champions Real Madrid and in the following year in the round of eight against Bayern Munich.

Hans van Breukelen celebrated two more championship titles in 1991 and 1992. In the European Cup of National Champions in 1991/92 , Eindhoven lost to Belgian neighbors RSC Anderlecht in the second round . In the newly introduced UEFA Champions League 1992/93 , the team reached the group stage after successes over Žalgiris Vilnius and AEK Athens . There, however, the club had no chance against group winners AC Milan , as well as IFK Göteborg and FC Porto . After the 1993/94 season, Hans van Breukelen ended his successful career at the age of 37.

Dutch national team

The 23-year-old van Breukelen was in the squad for the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy, but was only number 3 behind the established Piet Schrijvers and Pim Doesburg . In qualifying for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, the Netherlands failed behind Belgium and France and Ireland , failing to qualify for the tournament. The participation in the European Championship 1984 in France was not achieved by a second place behind Spain . Hans van Breukelen made two appearances, but remained number 2 behind the now 37-year-old Schrijvers. Particularly disappointing was the failure to qualify for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, when the Netherlands only finished second behind the outsider from Hungary . In the meantime, van Breukelen had established himself as number 1 in the Dutch goal.

He celebrated the greatest success in his international career in the following European Football Championship in 1988 in Germany. As the undisputed number 1 ahead of Joop Hiele from Feyenoord Rotterdam , he and his teammates Frank Rijkaard , Ronald Koeman , Ruud Gullit , Marco van Basten , Arnold Mühren and Adri van Tiggelen won the European championship by beating the Soviet Union 2-0 . The 2-1 success in the semifinals against the German national soccer team was particularly remembered . The Netherlands was also one of the favorites at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, which made the end of the last 16 against Germany all the more disappointing . Two years later, the Netherlands was able to reach the semi-finals at the European Championships in Sweden in 1992 , but lost there to the underdog Denmark on penalties and thus missed the final against their old rivals Germany. After the tournament, Hans van Breukelen ended his 12-year international career after 73 appearances.
