John Neilson Robertson (born January 20, 1953 in Uddingston South Lanarkshire , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player and current football coach .
Player career
John Robertson started his professional football career at Nottingham Forest in 1970 . After five years in the second division, he made it back to the Football League First Division in the 1976/77 season . He was able to score 6 goals in 41 league games. In the Football League First Division 1977/78 his team achieved the sensation of winning the championship before Liverpool FC as a promoted team. Robertson managed an excellent season with twelve goals in 42 games. The team was coached by Brian Clough , with whom Forest had its most successful period in the club's history at the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s.
The following season was also very successful and finished with 2nd place in the Football League First Division 1978/79 and winning the National Champion Cup in 1979 . In the final, the Swedish champions Malmö FF were defeated 1-0 in Munich . Trevor Francis scored the winning goal .
As defending champion, Nottingham also started in the national championship cup in 1980 and was able to win the title in Madrid with a goal by Robertson 1-0 against Hamburger SV . In 1980 it was enough to finish fifth in the First Division. The title hat trick did not succeed in the national championship cup in 1981 , Forest failed in the first round at the Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia and in the league they only reached 7th place.
This meant that three outstanding seasons had passed, in which there was a championship win, two successes each in the European Cup and the League Cup and the 1979 European Supercup. In addition to John Robertson, goalkeeper Peter Shilton , defender Viv Anderson , midfielder Martin O'Neill and striker Trevor Francis shaped the club during this time.
He moved to rival Derby County in July 1983 and returned to Nottingham Forest for one season in August 1985. In 1986 he ended his successful professional career at the age of 33.
In the following years he worked as a chief scout and assistant coach together with his former teammate Martin O'Neill . After stints at Wycombe Wanderers , Norwich City , Leicester City and Celtic Glasgow, this position led him to Premier League club Aston Villa in 2006 , where he still works today.
Scottish national team
Between 1978 and 1983 John Robertson played 28 caps for Scotland in which he scored 8 goals. The highlight of his national team career was participation in the 1982 World Cup in Spain . He scored his only tournament goal in the 5-2 opening win against New Zealand . After a 1: 4 defeat against Brazil and a 2: 2 against the Soviet Union , Scotland was eliminated in the preliminary round as third in the table.
