Football League First Division 1977/78

The Football League First Division 1978/79 was the 80th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 19, 1978 and ended on May 18, 1979.

The Liverpool won with eight points ahead of defending champions Nottingham Forest his now eleventh championship. The Reds set a record that is still valid today. According to the later three-point rule , this was 98 points. The table sixteenth Norwich City also set a new record with 23 draws.

All three newly promoted Tottenham Hotspur , FC Southampton and Bolton Wanderers could keep the class; instead, the Queens Park Rangers , Birmingham City and Chelsea FC had to go into the Second Division . These three clubs should be replaced in the following season by the three second division promoted Crystal Palace , Brighton & Hove Albion and Stoke City .

A total of 486 players were used, with Liverpool FC having the fewest with 15 and Chelsea FC having the most players in league games with 31. 126 newcomers were opposed to 90 footballers who last came into play in the 1978/79 season. 29 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

The championship team of Liverpool FC

The following table lists all players who played in a league game for Liverpool FC during the 1978/79 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
