Football League First Division 1976/77

The Football League First Division 1977/78 was the 79th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 20, 1977 and ended on May 9, 1978.

Nottingham Forest won the English championship for the first time in the club's history, seven points ahead of defending champions Liverpool . This was also the first championship title after 1962 for an English second division promoted from the previous year. The two climbers Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea FC were also able to keep the class; instead, West Ham United , Newcastle United and Leicester City had to move into the Second Division . These three clubs should be replaced in the following season by the three second division promoted Tottenham Hotspur , FC Southampton and Bolton Wanderers .

A total of 480 players were used, with Nottingham Forest with 16 the fewest and Newcastle United with 35 the most players in league games. 96 newcomers opposed 118 footballers, who last came into play in the 1977/78 season. 25 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

    The Nottingham Forest championship team

The following list shows all players who played in a league game for Nottingham Forest during the 1977/78 season. The number of appearances and the goals scored are shown in brackets.

In English football, a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League , all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*).
