Robert Dennis "Bob" Latchford (born January 18, 1951 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . The 12-time England national team player was considered the ideal type of center forward who was equally powerful both in the air and on the ground.

Athletic career

Latchford began his career at Birmingham City and scored two goals straight away on his debut when he was 18. In total, he played 158 times for Birmingham and scored 68 goals. He was then sold to Everton FC for a then-breaking British transfer record (£ 350,000) , where he was the top scorer in six seasons. In 268 games he scored 138 goals. He benefited from the fact that despite his size he was very fast, especially on the short distances. His club played a rather subordinate role in the English league, while city rivals Liverpool FC collected trophies on the assembly line. Only in 1977 did Latchford reach the final of the League Cup with Everton. In the 1977/78 season Latchford was also top scorer in the top English division with 30 goals.

Since he did not play for a top English club, he had comparatively few A-internationals for England despite his goalscoring successes. In his twelve missions he kicked five times; he made his debut on November 16, 1977 against Italy and the game against Austria on June 13, 1979 was to be his last international match. The then national coach Ron Greenwood preferred him from now on Paul Mariner from Ipswich Town .

When Latchford left Everton in 1981 and moved to Swansea City , he was Everton's most successful goalscorer after World War II with 106 league goals . This record was only broken in 1990 by Graeme Sharp . For Swansea City, he scored a hat trick on his first appearance. He later played for the Dutch team NAC Breda , the English clubs Coventry City and Lincoln City and most recently in Wales for Newport County and Merthyr Tydfil . For Swansea City and Merthyr Tydfil, he won the Welsh Cup three times in 1982, 1983 and 1987 .
