Derek Tennyson Kevan (born March 6, 1935 in Ripon , † January 4, 2013 ) was an English football player who u. a. was active for West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City . Between 1957 and 1961 he played fourteen international matches (eight goals) for the English national team.
Player career
West Bromwich Albion (1953-1963)
After starting his career with the lower class club Bradford Park Avenue Kevan moved in 1953 to the English first division club West Bromwich Albion . For his new club, however, he made his debut at the beginning of the Football League First Division in 1955/56 . Therefore, he missed the success of his club in the FA Cup 1953/54, when Albion secured the title with a 3-2 final win over Preston North End . After two years in mid-table, West Brom finished the 1957/58 season in fourth. In the First Division 1961/62 the team around Bobby Robson and Kevan only reached ninth place in the table, but Kevan secured the title of top scorer thanks to thirty-three league goals together with Ray Crawford from the champions Ipswich Town .
Manchester City (1963-1965)
After Kevan was sold against his will in March 1963 to the second division club Chelsea , he moved to Manchester City in the summer of the same year . City was relegated from the First Division in the preseason and only managed to return to the First Division in 1966. In two years in the second division, Kevan (67 games / 48 goals) stood out as a very accurate striker. After moving to Crystal Palace in the summer of 1965, Kevan's performance deteriorated significantly until the end of his career.
English national team (1957–1961)
Derek Kevan made his debut for the English national team against Scotland in April 1957 and scored his first goal straight away. He was subsequently appointed to the squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. In the first game against the Soviet Union he scored the next goal in the 66th minute, before Tom Finney scored the 2-2 final score. After playing in the second game against Brazil (0-0), he scored the final 2-2 in the third game against Austria. England then lost the play-off against the Soviets 1-0 and had to travel home. The 23-year-old Kevan was used in all four games and scored two goals. Four years later he was reappointed to the squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile, but was not used.
death
Kevan died in a Birmingham hospital on January 4, 2013 after a long illness.
