Luther Loide Blissett (born February 1, 1958 in Falmouth , Jamaica ) is a retired English football player of Jamaican descent. He played in the late 1970s and 1980s for Watford FC and AC Milan , among others, and played 14 international matches for the English national football team . The Italian anarchist artist group Luther Blissett later named itself after him .

Career

Fast climb with Watford

Between 1975 and 1983, Blissett scored 95 goals in 246 games for Watford FC during its rapid rise from a lower division to the English First Division (the top division at the time). His best season was the 1982/83 season , in which he scored 27 goals and Watford became English runner-up behind Liverpool FC . Blissett then moved to AC Milan for £ 1m .

In October 1983 he made his debut as one of the first black players for the English national team. He was substituted on in the second half in the 2-1 win against West Germany. In his second international match he scored a hat trick , the game against Luxembourg ended 9-0.

Little luck in Italy and return to England

At his new club AC Milan, however, he was less lucky and scored only 5 goals in 30 league games, too few for the demands of the top Italian team. After just one season, he moved back to Watford FC for £ 550,000, where he played until 1988. In the English national team he played a total of 14 times up to June 1984, but scored no more goals besides his hat-trick against Luxembourg.

Late years and end of career

In November 1988 Blissett moved to the second division AFC Bournemouth , where he scored 56 goals in 121 league games under coach Harry Redknapp . After Bournemouth's relegation in 1991, he moved again for one season to Watford FC, which was now also only second class. Luther Blissett has scored 10 goals in 42 games this season and is Watford's record player and scorer with a total of 415 league games and 148 goals.

As part of the Football Association's candidacy to host the 2018 World Cup , the association appointed him as one of the ambassadors for the application alongside Michael Ballack , David Beckham , Tony Woodcock and Gianfranco Zola, among others .

Celebrity as a pseudonym

The artist group Luther Blissett, active from 1994 to 1999, named itself after Blissett . Blissett's name subsequently became a pseudonym often used in anarchist and situationist circles in Europe and North America - but without his direct involvement.

According to a report by the BBC , Luther Blissett is well informed about the activities under his name, but does not want to serve as a political symbol himself. He said, "These people do anything under my name and I get the fame or the trouble for it." Luther Blissett suspects his name was chosen because he was one of the first black players to play in Serie A and in During this time, she was also occasionally exposed to insults from right-wing fans.
