The FC Southport (officially: Southport Football Club ) is an English football club . Until 1978 the club was part of the Football League and is currently only active in the middle area of the league system in England , the National League .
history
Southport FC was founded in 1881. In 1911 the team became a founding member of the Central League , in which they played for ten years. In 1918, the club was bought by Vulcan Motor Engineering , so that the team ran from then on as Southport Vulcan . Three years later, the team was accepted into the Football League and came into the newly formed third-rate Third Division North . The league belonged to the team until 1958 when, due to the merger of the Third Division North with the Third Division South, the clubs from the rear of the leagues came into the newly created Fourth Division . 1967 succeeded as a runner-up behind Stockport County, the return to the third division, but three years later the relegation to the fourth division took place. 1973 succeeded as master again the rise, but this time the direct relegation followed. In 1978, the team occupied for the third time in a row only the penultimate place in the fourth division and was then voted out of the league by the Football League and replaced by Wigan Athletic .
Southport FC came to the fifth-tier Northern Premier League . There the team missed the qualification for the newly created Conference National in 1979 and therefore only played at the sixth highest level. It was not until 1993 that the club rose to the fifth division as champions of the league. In 1998 the team reached the final of the FA Trophy , but failed at Wembley with a 0-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town .
In 2003, FC Southport was relegated to the Northern Premier League, but qualified in 2004 for the newly founded, sixth-rate Conference North . As the first champions in the league, the club managed to return to the Conference National. There the team played directly against relegation, which could no longer be avoided as the penultimate of the 2006/07 season.
