Cheltenham Town (officially: Cheltenham Town Football Club ) - also known as The Robins - is an English football club from the county of Gloucester . He plays in the EFL League Two , the fourth English professional league , in the 2016/17 season .

history

After there had already been attempts to establish the sport of football in Cheltenham , today's Cheltenham Town Football Club was founded in early 1892. The club played its first game on March 12, 1892 against the Dean Close School team and lost 3: 4. Initially, only friendly games were played against neighboring teams, but towards the mid-1890s they joined the regular game operation of the Mid Gloucester League , which was won in 1897.

For the following decades, Cheltenham Town played in regional amateur leagues. Qualification for the FA Cup was achieved for the first time in the 1933/34 season . After victories over FC Barnet (2: 1) and Carlisle United (5: 1), on January 13, 1934, there was a battle of strength with the then second division club Blackpool . The game was lost 3-1, but the 10,389 spectators are the club's record number of visitors to this day. In 1935, the club joined the Southern League , a semi-professional league in which various classes were played until the 1980s . By winning the title in the Premier Division of the Southern League in 1985 the leap into the Conference National , the highest semi-professional league , from which Cheltenham Town was relegated back to the Southern League in 1992. In 1997 he was promoted to the conference again. The runner-up was reached there in the first year and the FA Trophy , the cup for semi-professional teams, was won by a 1-0 win against Southport FC .

A year later, the championship led to promotion to the third division and thus to professional football. In the Football League, Cheltenham has been commuting between the third and fourth leagues since then. 2006 was in the Football League Two , as the fourth class is now called, the fifth place and thus the playoffs for promotion. In the semifinals, first managed a 2: 1 away win over the Wycombe Wanderers , so that in the second leg in front of their own scenery, a 0: 0 sufficient to the final on 28 May 2006 at the Millennium Stadium of Cardiff against Grimsby Town to reach. There the Robins were able to prevail 1-0 and secure promotion. In the following year, the relegation succeeded for the first time in the third division. The weak 2008/09 season ended in 23rd place and relegation to Football League Two.
