Salford City (officially: Salford City Football Club ) - also known as The Ammies - is an English football club from the city of Salford , Greater Manchester, in north-west England . The club, which was founded in 1940, played for decades in lower-class amateur football, before being taken over by several former Manchester United professionals in 2014 and making four promotions and the club now plays in the fourth-class EFL League Two .

history

The club was founded in 1940 under the name Salford Central and played in local amateur leagues until 1963. In 1963 the club was accepted into the Manchester Football League and renamed itself to Salford Amateurs ; the nickname Ammies , which still exists today, is a belittling form of the word amateur . In 1978 the club moved to its existing venue Moor Lane and joined the Cheshire County League after its renovation in 1980 , and two years later this league merged with the Lancashire Combination to form the North West Counties Football League . In 1980 Salford Amateurs merged with Anson Villa to form Salford FC , and in 1990 the club was renamed Salford City .

In 1990 they took part in the FA Cup for the first time on the occasion of the 50th anniversary , but failed in the pre-qualifying round at Warrington Town . 2008 succeeded as second in the table, the rise in the Northern Premier League , in whose division One North one held the following years. After the club was taken over in November 2014 by businessman Peter Lim and five former Manchester United professionals Phil Neville , Gary Neville , Nicky Butt , Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs , further sporting successes soon set in.

Under the coaching duo Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson, who were signed up in January 2015, at the end of the 2014/15 season they were promoted to the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League as relay champions , and in the following season as play-off winners they made it through to the National League North , the second highest division in non-league football . In the 2015/16 FA Cup , they also qualified for the first main round of the competition, in which they beat fourth division Notts County 2-0 and only failed in the second round in the replay after extra time against Hartlepool United , another fourth division club. From 2016 to 2017 the stadium was completely renovated and expanded to a capacity of 5,000 visitors, the stadium, which was renamed Peninsula Stadium through a sponsorship agreement , was opened by Alex Ferguson in October 2017 .

After the club Ground surrounded in the summer of 2017 Vollprofitum succeeded in the season 2017/18 as champions of the National League North promotion to the National League . There they made headlines in advance with the engagement of goal scorer Adam Rooney , who moved from the Scottish first division club and European Cup participant FC Aberdeen to Salford. Previously, Graham Alexander was introduced as the new coach in May 2018 after the club split from the previous coaching duo following promotion.

In January 2019, David Beckham , another member of the Class of 92, acquired shares in the club. The team occupied third place in the table at the end of the 2018/19 season . In the promotion play-offs, the team first prevailed on penalties against FC Eastleigh , in the final at Wembley Stadium in London , AFC Fylde was defeated 3-0 and thus made it through to the EFL League Two .
