Peter Lim

Peter Lim (* 1953 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean entrepreneur and investor. Lim was once one of Singapore's leading stockbrokers and is now a private investor. He has invested in sectors from palm oil to medicine. He is also the owner of the Spanish football club Valencia CF and owns 40% of the shares in the English football club Salford City . In January 2020 his fortune was from Forbes to approximately 2.1 billion US dollars estimated, making it one of the most Singaporeans.

The son of a fishmonger grew up with his seven siblings in a two-bedroom council flat in the Bukit Ho Swee settlement of Singapore, which was then considered one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the city. Lim completed his secondary education at the Raffles Institution . After completing his military service, he moved to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia . To finance his university education, Lim also worked as a taxi driver, cook and waiter. At university, he sharpened his instincts and skills as an investor. He has a degree in accounting and finance and initially worked as an accountant. He was a tax advisor before becoming a stock trader.

In the early 1990s, Lim invested around 10 million US dollars in the young palm oil company Wilmar International , which is now one of the largest agricultural groups in Asia. In addition, Lim made various other successful investments. Lim left the brokerage business in 1996 and became a private investor. He was able to escape the 1998 Asian Crisis by selling most of his stocks and holding cash. In 2010 he sold his stake in Wilmar International for $ 1.5 billion when commodity prices were at their peak. In 2014 Peter Lim bought Valencia CF for a sum of 100 million euros. His decisions in the club's management were criticized by fans of the club. This included the dismissal of popular coach Marcelino García in 2019.

In addition to his work as an investor, Lim pursues various philanthropic activities. In June 2010 the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF) launched the SOF Peter Lim Scholarship with a donation of 10 million Singapore dollars from Lim. The gift is the largest single donation in Singapore to sports development. In 2019 he made another donation of the same amount. In 2014, Lim donated US $ 3 million to Nanyang Technological University to fund a professorship in Peace Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies to protect and promote interdenominational harmony in Singapore.

Lim is the father of two children he had with his former wife Teo Geok Fong, from whom he is now divorced.
