criticism

According to the 2006 annual report, Wilmar International received a certificate stating that “raw palm oil from Wilmar's plantations [...] is sustainably produced and the entire production chain is traceable”. However, some environmental organizations claim that Wilmar International is illegally clearing rainforest. In a study published in July 2007, Friends of the Earth Netherlands wrote that Wilmar International started forest fires and violated the rights of local people in Indonesia.

The environmental protection organization Robin Wood also heavily criticizes Wilmar and accuses the company of overexploitation . Wilmar is certified as a sustainable palm oil supplier by the RSPO , but tramples on environmental protection. Slash and burn attacks and attacks on the indigenous population of Sumatra were part of everyday life at Wilmar.

Among other things, Wilmar's daughter PT Asiatic Persada was accused of using a police brigade to destroy the homes of 83 families from the Suku Anak Dalam indigenous community in the Indonesian province of Jambi in 2011 in the vicinity of their own oil palm plantations after some members of the community were accused of stealing oil palm fruits had been. Negotiations are still ongoing, although the sale of PT Asiatic Persada to PT Agro Mandiri Semesta in April 2013 could significantly limit their progress.

Against the background of the conflict, the environmental organization Rettet den Regenwald launched a campaign in August 2011 against the Dutch-British group Unilever , which purchases palm oil from Wilmar International for its products.

Certification

Wilmar has been a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2005 . The RSPO consists of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers in the palm oil industry and was founded to set global standards for environmentally friendly, sustainable palm oil. In 2011, all Wilmar production sites and plantations in Malaysia were awarded the RSPO certificate, which is awarded by the TüV-Rheinland, which now admits that it has prepared a courtesy report for Wilmar. Of the annual production volume of the group, around 520,000 tonnes were certified palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia. The company's stated goal is to obtain RSPO certification for all of its Indonesian production sites by 2015/2016. However, Wilmar also sells illegally produced palm oil.

country

According to the company website, the company carries out HCV assessments to examine areas worthy of protection before starting the development of new plantations (HCV or High Conservation Value Forest - natural forest particularly worthy of protection). HCV assessments are made by independent experts and reviewed by the High Conservation Value (HCV) Network. The concept of particularly protected areas or High Conservation Value Areas (HCVA) was developed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for forestry certification systems. The aim was to define regions which have specific, ecological, socio-economic or landscape value or which are particularly worthy of protection due to their importance for biodiversity .

biodiversity

Since 2009–2011, Wilmar has participated in a project with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the Wildlife Conservation Society , Indonesia (WCS), and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). The aim was a more effective application of the RSPO principles and criteria related to biodiversity in Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia. The two-year pilot program formed part of the International Finance Corporation's Biodiversity and Agricultural Commodities Program (BACP). The program included the development and testing of practical tools and guidelines to help consultants and palm oil companies implement the RSPO principles and criteria related to biodiversity more effectively.

In 2012 the ZSL started a second BACP project with the participation of Wilmar. The aim of this project was to develop tools to support RSPO certified growers in monitoring their HCV areas. The focus of the project is on the development of protocols for the monitoring of the HCV regions as well as on the introduction of a computer program with which palm oil plantations can control, analyze and adapt their HCV monitoring systems.

In 2009, Wilmar signed a letter of intent with the government of the Malaysian state of Sabah for a five-year partnership to expand, restore and upgrade the riverbank area along the Segama River for the proboscis monkeys that live there and are threatened with extinction . In 2010, the company announced that it was working with the Sabah Forestry Department to plant 150,000 new trees along 47 kilometers along the Segama River. Wilmar supports the Sabah Wildlife Department and the Borneo Rhino Alliance (formerly SOS Rhino Borneo) in the fight against poaching. To do this, the company employs a team of law enforcement officers on its Sabahmas plantation, which is adjacent to the Tabin game reserve.

In 2011, Wilmar signed a joint agreement with the non-profit Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) and the government of Central Kalimantan. As part of a formal partnership, the three contracting parties agreed to develop exemplary management practices for the protection of orangutans in palm oil plantations.
