Marcelino García Toral (born August 14, 1965 in Careñes ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach .

Player career

As a player, Marcelino made 74 first division appearances for his youth club Sporting Gijón . He scored two goals. The Asturians played their first game in the Primera División at 1-1 away at Celta Vigo on December 22, 1985. He had less luck in his last two stations. Marcelinho spent one season each with Racing Santander and UD Levante in the Segunda División , but relegated to Segunda División B both times .

Coaching career

The beginnings

Marcelino started his professional football career as a coach at his ex-club Sporting Gijón in the Spanish Segunda División . In his first season he only just failed to rise. In the 2004/05 season , the team could not confirm this performance: Sporting ended up in ninth place in the table. In the summer of 2005, Marcelino left Sporting to join Recreativo Huelva . As the first in the table he rose in his first season with the Andalusians. He was also able to prove his skills in Spain's elite league. With the traditional club, which started as a relegation candidate, he reached eighth place in the table.

The last few years

After two years at “Recre”, Marcelino decided in the summer of 2007 for the offer from Racing Santander , which he surprisingly won the UEFA Cup for the first time . After just one year, he left the Cantabrians again in summer 2008 and signed with the financially strong relegated Real Saragossa . There he succeeded in the desired promotion in the 2008/09 season . In December 2009, the club separated from him and replaced him with José Aurelio Gay . In February 2011 he returned to Racing Santander, but only stayed until the end of the 2010/11 season and then hired at Sevilla FC . There he was released after average results in February 2012. In January 2013 he signed a contract with second division club Villarreal and rose with the club at the end of the season in the Primera División.

In August 2016 he was released from his duties as a trainer.
