Elche Club de Fútbol is a Spanish football club from Elche .

history

The club was founded on January 10, 1923 as Elche Football Club . Six years later he took part in the first season of the newly founded Tercera División . In 1934 he was promoted to the Segunda División . As a result of the Spanish Civil War , the club was renamed Elche Club de Fútbol in 1939 , as clubs were prohibited from using non-Spanish parts of the name. In the following years they played almost without exception in the Tercera División. With the beginning of the 1957/58 season, however, FC Elche managed a sensational march through, whereupon the club found itself in the Primera División for the first time in the 1959/60 season . In 1964 Elche achieved fifth place in the league, the best placement in the club's history to date. In 1966, the club put Vavá for the first and only time the top scorer of the league.

After a short detour to the Segunda División followed from 1973 five more seasons in the first division. After relegation in the 1977/78 season , however, the club repeatedly just missed promotion. If it succeeds - as in 1984 and 1988 - you were relegated straight away in the following season. In 1991 he did the descent into the Segunda División B . Since 1999, however, the club played again in the 2nd division. In the 2010/11 season , Elche played for promotion to the Primera División until the end. In the two decisive relegation games, however, Granada CF was able to prevail due to the away goals rule . In the 2012/13 season , the club finally succeeded in direct promotion and thus returned to the Primera División after 24 years . Although in the two years that followed, the club held a sporting position in the Primera División and took 13th place in the middle of the table in the 2014/15 season, but the club had to be relegated from the top Spanish division due to financial liabilities for the 2015/16 season. In the 2020/21 season , FC Elche will play in the Primera División again and have been confirmed as the third and last promoted team. The team achieved this by winning the promotion round in the final of the Segunda División against FC Girona.

The jerseys

After the founding, Elche initially played completely in white for five years. When Czech coach Antón Fivébr went for a walk through Elche for the first time, he was impressed by the many palm trees in the city and prompted the shirts to have a thick, green bar in the middle of the shirt from now on. Since then, the club has also been called Franjiverdes (English: The Green Striped) . The colors of the away jerseys are exactly the opposite, i.e. white on a green background, although the away jerseys have also varied in recent years.
