Real Sporting de Gijón , commonly known as Sporting Gijon in German-speaking countries , is a football club from Gijón in Spain in the autonomous community of Asturias . The club was founded in 1905 and plays in the Segunda División . The club is one of the few teams in Spain that has never played below the second division.
history
The club was founded on June 1, 1905 as Sporting Gijonés . In 1912, the Spanish King Alfonso XIII allowed. under his patronage the nickname Real ("royal") and the club called itself from then on Real Sporting Club Gijonés and from 1916 Real Sporting de Gijón until the ban on foreign language words in club names in 1941. The club then operated under that name Real Gijón .
After having always played in the Segunda División since being admitted to official league games, promotion to the Primera División was achieved for the first time in the 1944/45 season after Gijón had previously missed promotion to the playoffs several times as champion of the Segunda División .
The club shuttled between the first and second division for a long time and was able to establish itself in La Liga in the early 1970s . Up until the 1997/98 season they were able to hold the top division with only a one-year break and qualified for the UEFA Cup several times . The Spanish runner-up in the 1978/79 season and two finals in the Copa del Rey remained his greatest successes .
After relegation to the second division, the club was rarely able to play its way into the top half of the table, but made it back to the Primera División for the 2008/09 season , where they could stay for four years before the team went into gear in 2012 had to compete in the second division.
In 2015, the team rose as second in the table in the Segunda División back to the Primera División.
In the 16/17 season, however, they rose again as tables 18th in the Segunda División.
