Juan José Nogués Portalatín (born March 28, 1909 in Saragossa , † 1998 ) was a Spanish football goalkeeper and coach.
Player career
Nogués' first professional station was Real Saragossa CD from 1928 to 1930. He made his first first division game December 28, 1930 for FC Barcelona in a 1-1 draw against Racing Santander . In his twelve years with FC Barcelona - with a break of three years because of the civil war in Spain - he won the Catalan championship five times .
Between 1932 and 1941 Nogués played 10 games for the Catalan football team . Among other things, he also played in the international match against Spain, which was just preparing for the 1934 World Cup and ultimately lost this game 2-0. This brought Nogués the nomination for the Spanish squad for the 1934 World Cup . At this World Cup he also played his only international match for Spain. Due to the injury of regular goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora in the first quarter-final game against Italy and the fact that that game was still not decided with a 1-1 even after extra time and had to be repeated the next day, Nogués was used in the replay against Italy. Italy won 1-0.
Coaching career
In 1942 Nogués was coach of FC Barcelona. Already in his first season he was almost relegated with Barcelona, but in the end they won the relegation games against Real Murcia . Nevertheless, they managed to win the Spanish Cup in the same season after a 4-3 win in extra time over Athletic Bilbao . In his second season 1942/43 he was third in the league with Barça and was eliminated from the Spanish Cup in the semifinals. Barcelona had won the cup semi-final first leg against Real Madrid 3-0, but lost the second leg 1:11. This defeat was the subject of very controversial discussions: Franco allegedly sent some of his men to the Barcelona dressing room at half-time, threatening the Barcelona player with death if they did not lose the game. FC Barcelona, as a representative of Catalonia, was a thorn in Franco's side because Barcelona was one of the few places where Catalan was still spoken at the time, as Franco declared Castilian Spanish as the only official language. The Spanish federation has already removed the game from their records.
Later Nogués trained Gimnàstic de Tarragona , Espanyol Barcelona , Sporting Gijón and UE Lleida .
