Life

Barbalonga was a member of the influential Pentadattilo noble family in Messina. He received his first artistic training in his hometown from Giovanni Simone Commandé (1580–1634). Later Barbalonga went to Rome to the workshop of Domenico Zampieri, called Domenichino , who stayed in the Tiber city until 1630 and whose painting style he appropriated. In Rome he created panels and altar leaves for several churches. In 1633 Barbalonga became a member of the Accademia di San Luca .

In the same year he returned to Sicily and developed a lively artistic activity in the Messina area. Here he founded a painting school where numerous artists were trained. His most important students were Giovanni Angelo Canini (1617–1666), Onofrio Gabrielli (1616–1706), Agostino Scilla (1629–1700), Domenico Maroli (1612–1676) and Bartolomeo Tricomi .

His main work from the first time after his return is the "Conversion of Paul" in the monastery church of S. Anna in Messina. For the public gallery in Messina he painted a series of pictures that were brought to Spain by the Conte di S. Stefano.
