Domenico Maroli (* 1612 in Messina ; † 23 May 1676 ibid) was an Italian painter in Venice and Sicily .

Life

At a young age, Maroli joined Antonio Barbalonga's workshop , where he stayed for eight years.

Around 1642 he went to Venice. There he dealt intensively with the genre painting of the Bassano family of painters , whose peasant, rustic style he appropriated and combined it with the classical elements of his teacher Barbalonga. As his friend, the painter and writer Marco Boschini (1613–1678) wrote, he painted pastoral landscapes , seascapes and pictures of animals during this time .

About 1642 stayed in Bologna for a short time . He must have been back in his hometown before 1657, because the Senate of Messina ordered the painting Madonna della lettere from him , which was donated to the municipality of Catania in 1657 .
