Reggio Calabria Cathedral
The Cathedral Maria Santissima Assunta in Reggio Calabria is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria-Bova in the Italian region of Calabria . It is the largest church in the region and is consecrated to Mary as the one who was taken into heaven .
history
The first church was built around 300 AD on the ruins of a Greek Temple of Apollo. It has been expanded and rebuilt over the centuries. Completely destroyed by the earthquake in Messina in 1908 , the cathedral was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style.
building
The main facade is structured by four towers. The statues of Saint Paul and Saint Stephen are located on the outside staircase to the left and right of the portal . The church was completed in 1928, the 28 m high campanile in 1931.
inner space
On the inside of the portal the region of Calabria with the most important churches is depicted. The three-aisled interior houses the tombs of some bishops and a valuable church treasure with silver and goldsmith work from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Sacrament chapel
The side chapel of Santissimo Sacramento, which Bishop Agostino Gonzalez had built in 1539, was destroyed several times by conquerors or earthquakes and has been repeatedly reconstructed. In addition to figures of saints, original inlay work from the 16th century has been preserved.
organ
The organ was built in the years 2002-2008 by the organ building company Fabbrica Artigiana Organi Michelotto Francesco di Michelotto Daniele, whereby the pipe material of the previous organ was largely reused.
The instrument is divided into two housing bodies, which are housed in the transept. In the left transept, on a small grandstand above the entrance to the Sacrament Chapel, is the central organ case, which contains the first three manual works and the pedal , most of which arose from the previous organ . The Echowerk (IV. Manual, Organo Eco), which was added in 2008, is located in the right transept on a small grandstand. The two organ cases are made of walnut wood and equipped with decorative elements. The mobile gaming table is usually in the main nave, close to the ambo, i.e. H. to the right transept.
The organ has a total of 71 registers (4,805 pipes) and three effect registers (Campane) on four manuals and pedal. Of the 71 registers, 52 registers are fully developed, the remaining registers are mostly extended voices or transmissions. The playing and stop actions are electric. The organ has 33 paddocks .
