A second sea battle took place here and at neighboring Naulochos in 36 BC. In which Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa defeated Sextus Pompeius as part of the civil war .
On July 20, 1860, a battle took place here between Giuseppe Garibaldi on his “ train of a thousand ” and the Bourbon troops; Garibaldi's victory cleared the way for the union of southern Italy with the north.
