Location and dates

Villafranca Tirrena is 23 km west of Messina . The residents mainly work in agriculture and tourism.

The A20 / E90 motorway runs past the village . Villafranca Tirrena has a train station on the Fiumetorto – Messina railway line . The journey time to Messina Centrale is around 15 minutes.

history

The place was already mentioned in Aragonese times. In the 16th century the place was a fiefdom of the Cottone family.

Buildings

The castle was built by Stefano Cottone in 1590. In the parish church of San Nicolo there is a painted wooden cross from the 16th century and a marble statue of the Madonna and Child.
