Savoca is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Messina in the autonomous region of Sicily with 1732 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). She is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Location and dates

Savoca is 39 km southwest of Messina . The residents mainly work in agriculture and grow citrus fruits, olives and fruits. The neighboring municipalities are Casalvecchio Siculo , Forza d'Agrò , Furci Siculo , Sant'Alessio Siculo and Santa Teresa di Riva .

history

In 1132 Roger II founded a Norman settlement here. The village of Savoca has been known since 1415. The name of the place comes from Sambucus , the elderberry .

  • Church of Maria in Cielo Assunta, a parish church built in the 12th century; from here you have a wide view of the coast and the sea
  • Church of San Nicolò from the 14th century; it contains a statue of Santa Lucia
  • Church of San Michele from the 13th century

Movie

Savoca was the filming location for several scenes in the film trilogy The Godfather , directed by Francis Ford Coppola .
