Pettineo is a city in the metropolitan city of Messina in the Sicily region in Italy with 1274 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Pettineo is 166 km west of Messina and 97 km east of Palermo at the foot of Monte San Cuono in the Valle dell'Halaesa ( Halaesa or Alesa valley). The residents mainly work in agriculture. The nearest motorway junction is Tusa on the A20 autostrada and is 11 km from Pettineo.
The neighboring municipalities are: Castel di Lucio , Mistretta , Motta d'Affermo , Reitano , San Mauro Castelverde ( PA ) and Tusa .
history
In 1170 the Paternò family was enfeoffed with Pettineo, in the 13th century Manfred of Sicily subordinated the place, at that time still under the name Casale Pectineum , Manfredi Maletta. After the Sicilian Vespers , Frederick II of Aragon gave the place into the hands of Alanfranco di San Basilio. In 1332 the community passed to the county of Geraci Siculo . In the first years of the 14th century a castrum was created around the small group of houses (Casale) . In the 15th century, the Migaido was built, a fortification whose thirteen meter high tower still exists today as a ruin. In the 20th century, the place suffered from severe emigration . While at the beginning of the century there were still more than 3,000 inhabitants in the village, today there are only less than half.

- Chiesa di San Nicola lo Proto , also called La porticella , the oldest church in the town, was built in the 14th century, probably around 1329. Initially named after Santo Stefano and now also called Chiesa del Crocifisso .
- Chiesa Matrice , the main church of the village, built between 1560 and 1579. It was consecrated in 1579 by the Archbishop of the Diocese of Cefalù , Ottaviano Preconio. Contains sculptures by Giacomo Gaggini from 1597.
