Scaletta Zanclea is a municipality of the Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 1,958 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Scaletta Zanclea is 17 kilometers southwest of Messina and consists of the districts Scaletta Marina, Scaletta Superiore, Guidomandri Marina and Guidomandri Superiore. The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and industry in Messina.

Scaletta Zanclea is located on the A18 / E45 motorway, the next exit is Messina Sud / Tremestieri and is about 13 km away. From Scaletta Zanclea station, the train takes 20 minutes to Messina and via Taormina about 1 hour 40 minutes to Catania .

The neighboring municipalities are: Itala and Messina.

Surname

Scaletta (German "Treppchen") describes the gradual rise of the location from the sea to the castle, Zanclea refers as an adjective (German about "quarreling") to Zankle , the first Greek name of the neighboring Messina, and thus serves to distinguish it from other Italians Places called Scaletta .

history

The oldest district, Scaletta Superiore, developed around the castle from the 16th century. From 1928 to 1947, Itala , which is neighboring to the south, also belonged to the political municipality.

On October 1, 2009, Scaletta Zanclea as well as the southern districts of Messina were badly affected by landslides as a result of a storm ; more than 30 people were killed.
