Motta d'Affermo is a city of Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 685 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Motta d'Affermo is 148 km west of Messina and 99 km east of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture and forestry. The nearest motorway junction is Tusa on the A20 autostrada , 13 km from Motta d'Affermo.

Torremuzza is one of the districts. The neighboring communities are Pettineo , Reitano and Tusa .

history

The place was first settled in the post-Roman and Byzantine times around the 8th century. At that time the place was called Motta di Sparto (after Oberto de Sparto, around 1266) and also Motta dei Punici . Motta stands for fortress in the Phoenician language . From 1270 the place was under Hugues de Brusa, a French mercenary , from 1272 Dreuv de Lazabard. The Chiaramonte family ruled from 1296 to 1344 . From 1380 to 1452 the community was called Motta de Fermo (after Muccio di Fermo). Today's name comes from the Affermo family (Muzio or Mario D'Affermo) and originated in the 15th century when they took over the place from the Ventimiglia . In 1557 the fief went to Vincenzo Bonaiuto (also Vincenzo Bonajuto), in 1607 to Modesto Gambacurta, who was installed by the Marchese da Filippo III . Gregorio Castelli bought the fief in 1633 and from then on it remained in the family's possession for the next two centuries. After the feudal system was abolished in 1812, the municipality of Motta d'Affermo was established. In 1844 the place changed from the diocese of Cefalù to the diocese of Patti . The number of inhabitants has decreased continuously since 1881 due to emigration . The place had 2,448 inhabitants in 1881, currently there are only 859.

• Castello , a castle built around 1260 that was expanded in 1380.
• Maria SS. Degli Angeli , Chiesa Madre , church built in 1380 and enlarged in 1647. The Cappella del Crocifisso was inaugurated in 1706 and the presbytery in 1712 .
• Chiesa di San Luca , built in 1538 and named after the patron saint.
• Chiesa di San Rocco , named after the patron saint, dates back to 1657. The main gate dates from 1697, the transept and dome from 1712 to 1716. The facade and campanile were completed in 1776.
• Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate , church built in 1549
