Tusa is a city in the metropolitan city of Messina in the Sicily region in Italy with 2718 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Tusa is 166 km west of Messina and 95 km east of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture. The Tusa motorway junction is on the A20 .

The districts include Castel di Tusa and Milianni. The neighboring municipalities are Motta d'Affermo , Pettineo and San Mauro Castelverde ( PA ).

history

In the area of ​​Tusa, just below the city to the north, are the ruins of the ancient place Halaesa . Halaesa was founded in 403 BC. Founded. After the Roman period , the place was the seat of a diocese. The settlement of Ort was destroyed in Arab times . The population fled to an already existing, higher-lying settlement, which today forms the city center and was fortified by city walls. During the time of Norman rule, the place was converted into a rocca with towers. Thereafter the Tusa was ruled by the Ventimiglia family from Ventimiglia di Sicilia . In the 20th century the community suffered from severe emigration . While Tusa still had around 7,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the century, today it is less than half.
