Basicò is a small community in the metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 577 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Basicò is located 70 km west of Messina in the East Nebrodean Mountains. The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture (wine and grain) and cattle breeding.

The neighboring communities are Montalbano Elicona and Tripi .

history

Basicò and the area around Basicò were settled early on. There are finds from graves and settlements from the Neolithic Age around the village . In the Middle Ages, the monastery of Santa Maria di Basicò stood here, which no longer exists today. Until 1862 the place was called Casalnuovo.

Attractions

The castle of the barons from the 16th century has two portals that are worth seeing. The 18th century monastery of the Patri Basiliani has two crypts from the 13th century. The church of San Biagio dates from the 16th century. The parish church from 1600 is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi .
