Gaggi is a city of Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 3181 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Gaggi is 59 km southwest of Messina in the lower valley of the Alcantara River . The distance to Taormina is 15 km. The residents mainly work in agriculture. Olives, wine and wheat are grown.

Gaggi is about 6 km from the A18 / E45 motorway , Giardini-Naxos exit . In the direction of Francavilla you can visit the Gole dell'Alcantara from Gaggi . In contrast to many other mountain villages in Sicily, Gaggi is a growing place with several new development areas.

The neighboring municipalities are Castelmola , Castiglione di Sicilia ( CT ), Graniti , Mongiuffi Melia and Taormina .

history

At the time of the Romans the area around Gaggi was uninhabited. In 902 the area was conquered and settled by the Arabs. In 1078 Conte Ruggero D'Altavilla conquered the place and handed it over to the monastery of Savoca . In 1639 Giuseppe Barrile, later Baron von Melia and Marchese, conquered the small town. In 1820 Gaggi gained independence from Taormina .
