Gole dell'Alcantara
The Gole dell'Alcantara are gorges on the Alcantara River in Sicily . They are up to twenty meters deep and four to five meters wide and have eaten their way into the lava rock of nearby Etna for thousands of years .
The lava rock is one of the most characteristic features of the gorges. The walls are made of basaltic lava, which is low in silicon and rich in iron , magnesium and calcium . A slow erkaltender lava flow has enabled the emergence of prismischen , five- and six-sided columns.
The gorges are located on the state road 185 between Taormina / Giardini Naxos and Randazzo , just before Francavilla di Sicilia .
