Santa Marina Salina is a city of Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 875 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Santa Marina Salina is located on the east coast of the Aeolian island of Salina . It is the main town on the island. The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in summer in tourism. There are other jobs in the fishing industry.
Santa Marina Salina can be reached by ferry and hydrofoil from Messina or Milazzo . In summer there are also connections to Cefalù , Naples and Vibo Valentia .

history
The island of Salina and thus the town of Santa Marina Salina were already settled in the Neolithic . The settlement of Portella , one of the most important settlements of the Milazzese culture (approx. 1500/1450 to 1300/1270 BC), dates to the Middle Bronze Age . In the 4th century BC A settlement was founded in the area of today's place.
Further information
South of Santa Marina Salina is a salt lake , from which the name of the island and the place is derived. Salt production and the export of salt were an important source of income for the islanders until the end of the 19th century.
