Castelmola is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Messina in the autonomous region of Sicily with 1094 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

Location and dates

The community is 529  m slm on the summit of Monte Tauro. The distance to the neighboring municipality Taormina is three kilometers, to Messina it is 46 kilometers, to Catania 56 kilometers. The main livelihood of the residents is tourism .

The neighboring communities are Gaggi , Letojanni , Mongiuffi Melia and Taormina .

history

Castelmola was founded in the 8th century BC. Founded by the Sicelians . In 392 BC The city was destroyed together with Taormina by Dionysius I and 350 BC. Rebuilt. In 902 the place was destroyed again by the Arabs. In the Middle Ages, Castelmola was owned by various noble families. From 1929 to 1947 the place belonged to Taormina.
