Casalvecchio Siculo is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Messina in the region of Sicily in Italy with 763 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Casalvecchio Siculo is 40 km southwest of Messina . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture (wine, olives and grain).

The neighboring municipalities are Antillo , Castroreale , Forza d'Agrò , Furci Siculo , Limina , Sant'Alessio Siculo , Santa Lucia del Mela , Santa Teresa di Riva and Savoca .

history

In ancient times, Casalvecchio Siculo was a small place. Calatabieth was the name of the community in Arab times . From the 9th century to the 18th century, the place belonged to Savoca . From 1928 to 1939 Casalvecchio Siculo was part of Santa Teresa di Riva . Since that time the community has been independent.

Attractions

Basilica of SS. Pietro e Paolo di Agro

The church of Sant 'Onofrio dates from the 16th century. Next to the church of Sant 'Onofrio is the church museum.

Near the Agro River is the Basilica of Santi Pietro e Paolo from the Norman period. The church has three naves with two domes. On the outside of the church, the lava stone harmonises well with the tuff stone.
