The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo d'Agrò is a church building in Casalvecchio Siculo , Sicily . The building is on a slight slope a little above the Agrò.

history

The church was built in 1116/1117, replacing a previous building from the 6th century that was destroyed during battles between Islamic and Christian rulers. It belonged to a Basilian monastery to which Roger II transferred property in 1116 at the request of Abbot Gerasimos to finance the reconstruction. In 1131 the monastery was subordinated to the Archimandrite of San Salvatore , but retained its own abbots. In 1172 the repairs to the damage caused by the earthquake of 1169 were removed, as reported by a Greek inscription published by Antonino Salinas in 1885.

building

The outer walls made of red brick, light lime and black lava stones are structured by pilaster strips that split above and merge into a cross-arched frieze. Battlements form the top of the building.
