Acquedolci is a town and municipality of the Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 5577 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Acquedolci is located 106 km west of Messina on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture, fishing and tourism.

The neighboring municipalities are Caronia , San Fratello and Sant'Agata di Militello .

history

The place was founded in 1922 after a landslide in San Fratello . Acquedolci was a district of San Fratello until 1969. Since the 15th century there has been a tuna fishing area and a loading point for loading grain onto ships.

Attractions

There is a medieval castle in the village , which has been completely rebuilt over time. Nearby is the Grotto of San Teodoro, an archaeological site where finds from the Stone Age , up to 20,000 years old, came to light. The discovery of four male and three female skeletons is remarkable , including the oldest female skeleton to be discovered in Sicily to date. The finds to which u. a. Stone tools and jewelry made from shark teeth are also exhibited in the Museo Geologico Gemmellaro in Palermo and provide information about the way of life of the oldest inhabitants of Sicily.
