Malfa is a city of Metropolitan city of Messina in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 987 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Malfa is located on the north coast of the Aeolian island of Salina . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in summer in tourism. There are other jobs in the fishing industry.

Salina can be reached by ferries and hydrofoils from Messina or Milazzo to the port of Santa Marina Salina. In summer there are also connections to Cefalù , Naples and Vibo Valentia .

The districts Malfa and Pollara as well as the small island Scoglio Faraglione belong to the municipality . The neighboring communities on the island of Salina are Leni (southwest) and Santa Marina Salina (southeast).

history

The island of Salina and thus the place Malfa was already settled in prehistoric times. The name Malfa is derived from the former trade relations with the Amalfi Coast .

Further information

Since 1991 the “Sagra del cappero”, the caper festival, has taken place on the first weekend in June. At the beginning, agricultural experts from Palermo and Rome will travel to exchange experiences on caper cultivation and quality. This is followed by a two-day folk festival in which original costumes are worn and traditional music is danced and sung.

In 1994 Michael Radford shot the film The Postman in Pollara .
