Michael Radford (born February 24, 1946 in New Delhi , India ) is a British screenwriter and film director .

Career

Michael Radford was best known for the 1994 film The Postman , for which he was nominated in the categories of "best director" and "best script" at the Academy Awards .
Radford spent his youth in India. As a young man he came to England to study philosophy, politics and economics at Worcester College at Oxford University. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and actor for a while. In 1971 he was one of the founding class of the newly established National Film and Television School , where he trained as a documentary filmmaker. His best-known early documentaries include The Madonna and the Volcano (1979) and Van Morrison in Ireland (1981). He only made documentaries until 1983 before writing the screenplay for World War II romance At Another Time , which he also directed. This was followed by the most famous cinematic adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 with Richard Burton in his last role. In 1987 Radford filmed The Last Days in Kenya , but it would be seven years before he made his final breakthrough with The Postman . The film was the first foreign production since Ingmar Bergman's Screams and Whispers 22 years earlier to be nominated for an Oscar in the “best film” category. After this success, Radford took a break and did not return to theaters until 1998 with B. Monkey . Since then he has continued to make documentaries and feature films, including Flawless from 2007 with Michael Caine and Demi Moore , the documentary Michel Petrucciani - Life Against Time about Michel Petrucciani (2011) and the feature film Elsa & Fred with Shirley MacLaine (2014).
