Angelo Paino (born June 21, 1870 in Santa Marina Salina , Province of Messina , Italy , † July 29, 1967 in Messina ) was Archbishop of Messina from 1923 to 1963 .

Angelo Paino studied theology and philosophy in Naples and Rome . He was ordained a priest on September 16, 1894 . He then became professor of theology in Naples and later rector of the seminary of Anglona .

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Lipari on July 12, 1909 . He was ordained episcopate on July 25th of the same year by Letterio D'Arrigo Ramondini , Archbishop of Messina. Co - consecrators were Giovanni Battista Arrista-Vigo , Bishop of Acireale , and Salvatore Bella , Bishop of Foggia . From 1911 Paino sued the city of Lipari because he claimed the pumice stone deposits there for the church, but ultimately failed. At the request of Letterio D'Arrigo Ramondini, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . in October 1916 sub secreto to the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Messina. On 10 January 1921 he appointed Paino to coadjutor archbishop of Messina and Titular Archbishop of Antinoe .

After the Second World War, he also had the Messina Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1943, rebuilt. He also sold his pectoral in favor of financing. On August 11, 1948, the University of Messina awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy.

On March 7, 1963, Pope John XXIII. his resignation submitted for reasons of age and appointed him titular archbishop of Serrae . Angelo Paino also did not attend the Second Vatican Council . He moved into his apartment in the seminary of Messina and died at the age of 97 as the oldest Catholic bishop in the world.
