The metropolitan city of Messina (Italian Città Metropolitana di Messina ) is one of the three metropolitan cities of the Autonomous Region of Sicily of the Republic of Italy . The capital is Messina .

The metropolitan city of Messina is the legal successor to the Province of Messina (Italian Provincia di Messina ).

General

The metropolitan city of Messina occupies the north-eastern part of Sicily. It borders in the south on the metropolitan city of Catania and the Free Municipal Consortium Enna , in the west on the metropolitan city of Palermo , in the north on the Tyrrhenian Sea and in the east on the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina that separates Sicily from the continent.

The metropolitan city is divided into 108 parishes, which also include the parishes of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast. 620,721 inhabitants live in an area of ​​3247 km² (as of December 31, 2019) . Due to the Monti Peloritani and the Monti Nebrodi , the metropolitan city is mountainous, so that the population is mainly concentrated on the coast.

Tourist centers of the metropolitan city are Tindari , Taormina , Capo d'Orlando , Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands with the capital Lipari . They are also called Aeolian Islands after the mythical god Aiolus .
