nature

flora

The Monti Nebrodi is home to one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Sicily (50,000 ha). Due to the numerous natural streams and rivers, lush vegetation can also be found in the hot, dry summer months. Citrus fruits , olive trees and almonds thrive in the lower regions . In the higher forest regions, cedars , oaks and beeches , among others , and occasionally Nebrodi firs and wild herbs grow .

fauna

Fallow deer (Greek: nebros for stag calf), which gave the mountain its name, have been almost extinct over the centuries. Today foxes , martens , wild cats and wild boars are native to the Monti Nebrodi . In addition, 150 species of birds , mainly birds of prey and 70 different species of butterflies, find their habitat here.

natural reserve

In 1993 the area was placed under nature protection and the Parco dei Nebrodi regional park was created.
