The Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento ( Italian Libero consorzio comunale di Agrigento ) is an administrative unit of the Autonomous Region of Sicily in Italy . The capital is Agrigento . It was created through the transformation of the Province of Agrigento (Italian Provincia di Agrigento ) with Regional Law No. 8 of March 24, 2014 and the provisions of Regional Law No. 15 of August 4, 2015.
The Free Community Consortium is located on the south coast of Sicily. In the west it borders on the Free Parish Consortium Trapani , in the north on the metropolitan city of Palermo , in the east on the Free Parish Consortium Caltanissetta . It is divided into 43 parishes. This includes the municipality of Lampedusa e Linosa , which is located on the Pelagie Islands .
429,611 inhabitants live in an area of 3,042 km² (as of December 31, 2019) . The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The main attraction are the archaeological sites of Agrigento with temples from Greek times, which have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO . There are also several natural attractions in the province, including the Scala dei Turchi in the municipality of Realmonte and the Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cammarata Regional Park .
