Racalmuto

Racalmuto is a city in the free municipal consortium of Agrigento on the Italian island of Sicily and thus belongs to the Autonomous Region of Sicily .

Location and dates

Racalmuto is 23 kilometers northeast of Agrigento . The city has 7943 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), who mainly work in agriculture and rock salt extraction.

The neighboring communities are Bompensiere ( CL ), Canicattì , Castrofilippo , Favara , Grotte , Milena (CL) and Montedoro (CL).

history

The city emerged as an Arab hamlet , the name was Rahl al-mudd. In the 14th century the town grew around the fort.

The inhabitants speak a Sicilian dialect that is very different from the standard Italian language. For example, the translation for the apple in Sicilian is u pumu , whereas in Italian it is la mela .

Personalities

• Leonardo Sciascia was born in Racalmuto on January 8, 1921 and died in Palermo on November 20, 1989 .
